Why Sunflowers?
- Historically, the sunflower has been thought of as radiating pure happiness
- Unlike the original oil-seed type sunflowers, today's ornamental hybrids are vastly different and genetically improved
- Thanks to extensive worldwide crossbreeding efforts, we can now enjoy fresh-cut sunflower varieties with vase-life potential well exceeding a week
Why Our Sunflowers?
- Professional growing made possible through MSU agronomy education
- We now have over 17 years growing experience
- Our own on-going research and experimentation now includes having grown and compared 45 different varieties
- We continued each year by growing only the best tried and proven types, while trialing any and all "new" varietal introductions
- Early spring weekly greenhouse seeding and subsequent field transplanting extends our harvest season by weeks... normally from early July and lasting into October, weather permitting
- To avoid messy pollen shed and related human allergies, our concentrated growing focus includes predominantly pollen-free hybrids
- Though labor intensive, our hand-pruning and daily harvesting schedule assures us of consistent superior florist quality
- Our unique ancient lake-bottom soil types with their inherent calcium rich nature help in producing the highest quality and long lasting cut flowers
- We back up our responsible environmental consciousness by independent laboratory testing and soil fertility maintenance
- Our daily post harvest handing procedures include the immediate placement of fresh-cut stems into sterilized field containers with commercial preservatives added daily to clean water thereby assuring product freshness
- Our on-farm coolers maintained at 38º F and daily harvesting and local delivery also contribute to quality... vase-life is tremendously improved
- With 15 acres in total flower production, we remain large enough for regional wholesale distribution while avoiding the inevitable problems associated with larger scale production
- In a world of on-line direct consumer product availability, we've now evolved into offering the same farm-direct access. Translation: greater product freshness and related cost savings
